Looking for a unique present for children? Shark snorkelling at Skegness Aquarium is an experience we’d definitely recommend! We booked the Shark Snorkelling Ranger Experience as a birthday treat, and the kids absolutely loved it! They got to get into the water with real (baby) sharks and it was such a memorable experience!
What happens during the shark snorkelling experience?
The whole experience lasts approximately one hour, including changing, equipment fitting and a safety briefing, with around 20 minutes snorkelling in the shark tank. All equipment is provided; wetsuits, wet shoes and full-face snorkelling masks.
Once in the water, the children lined up along the edge of the tank, with sharks swimming right around their feet, which they absolutely loved! The instructor moves along the line, explaining what the sharks eat before feeding them right in front of the children. Some of the sharks preferred to stay at the bottom of the tank, whilst others were much more active, swimming around the kids. There are two types of sharks to spot Hasselt’s catsharks and epaulette sharks, famous for using its fins to walk along the seabed.
At the end, the instructor shared some fascinating facts about shark conservation and why protecting these animals is so important. As a diver myself, I was particularly pleased to hear this included in the experience.

What age is shark snorkelling at Skegness Aquarium for?
The experience is designed for children aged 6–11, with no previous snorkelling experience required. My daughter was a little nervous beforehand, but once she was in the water, she was absolutely fine. She had her head straight in the water, listening to the instructor and watching the sharks.
My son wasn’t particularly keen on the full-face snorkelling mask when he first tried it on out of the water. However, once he got into the tank, again he was completely comfortable and loved every minute!
There were five children in our session, which is the maximum group size, so everyone received plenty of attention from the instructor.
